Did you know
1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men experience
a major depression in their lifetime.
The Good News is Depression and Anxiety Can Be Overcome Through Counselling
Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand, and if they are severe, they can dramatically limit your life, preventing you from doing the things that give you pleasure.
Assess yourself by seeing if you experience any of the following signs of depression or anxiety:
• sleep problems: either excessive sleep or poor and interrupted sleep
• physical symptoms: such as headaches, stomach problems, tension or chest pains
• that are not attributed to other known factors
• excessive drinking, smoking, overeating or using drugs to get through the day
• feeling sad and irritable a lot of the time
• feeling hopeless and/or worthless
• decrease or increase in appetite
• loss of energy and always feeling tired
• excessive worry, fear or dread
• anxiety that interferes with daily functioning and relationships
• difficulty concentrating
Depression and anxiety can be truly debilitating.
They sap your energy and destroy your spirit.
When you feel depressed and anxious, it's hard to remember feeling any other way - your perspective is altered, and you may feel only darkness and despair.
Often depression and anxiety can cause an internal conflict like the following:
While you are immersed in feeling depleted, discouraged and unable to focus, your mind is blaming you and judging you, telling you that you shouldn't be feeling this way. This inner conflict wears you down even more, and you get into a vicious cycle of feeling badly, blaming yourself, and then feeling even worse afterwards.
While sometimes you might be aware of why you are feeling depressed or anxious, due to grief, loss, life changes, or other struggles you are facing, other times you may have no clear understanding of what is underneath your sadness and anxiety. It is common to feel frustrated and puzzled about why you feel depressed or anxious.
Stress is a contributing factor that can make depression and anxiety worse.
How do you know if you are experiencing too much stress?
Small amounts of stress in your life are actually healthy, and can call forth positive coping skills. However, if your stress level is high, and your body is constantly producing adrenaline to deal with the frustration and chaos of your life, you will never get the chance to slow down, relax, and rejuvenate. This creates a constant wear and tear on you that leads to problems.
Stress can undermine you emotionally, physically and mentally. If stress is occurring at unhealthy levels you will feel:
• less able to respond and cope with situations
• more physically exhausted and burned out
• less able to think creatively and constructively
Stress also undermines your immune system, and you will be more susceptible to getting sick and less able to bounce back afterwards.
